South Korea, the undisputed makeup and cosmetic surgery capital of the world, announced that it will start fining manufacturers and retailers that use animals to test cosmetics. Set to take effect in February, the regulations are in line with the global trend of banning the use of animal testing.

Yonhap reports that the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) will impose 1 million Korean won (US$850) fines on those who produce or sell finished cosmetic products that are tested on animals or contain ingredients that are tested on animals.

Media reports offered no elaboration on how fines will be doled out on an individual product basis or against the company overall.

The regulation was first announced in February of this year — giving a one-year grace period for implementation.
